I haven’t had much time to write lately, lots happening though. Including, surprise, we have a quickly escalating global food crisis! Which is why it is all the more important for everyone to start thinking more about how our food is grown, how it reaches us, and what we are all going to do when it is no longer feasible (many might say we passed this point long ago) to ship food hundreds or thousands of miles. We cannot afford to wait any longer, it would help if we all started growing more of our own produce, wherever we live.
My personal challenge as an apartment dweller is to locate a plot for a garden and grow my own produce to begin drastically cutting down on the amount of vegetables
I have to buy at stores or farmer’s markets. Additionally, I would like to have surplus produce to donate to friends or local foodbanks, so that my garden is benefiting more than just myself. As a first step, I’m going to follow the lead of a couple of friends and begin with indoor container gardens which will hopefully be transplanted to a lovely outdoor space in the near future.
What I need: a patch of land in my area 10′x10′ or larger, sturdy shovel, metal rake, fencing/border materials, seeds and starts, compost bin, water source nearby or a rain barrel.
I’ll keep you posted on how this goes!
